Traveling for the Weekend

Are you traveling for the long weekend? Yesterday I shared some summer outfits that I want in my closet and how Memorial Day Weekend is the "official start to summer". Memorial Day Weekend is also a huge travel weekend so I wanted to share some great travel items.

I have a couple 4-wheeled suitcases and love them. One of the things that I like about having the 4 wheels is that I can slide it next to me. Being on the shorter side of the spectrum this is the easiest way for me to move quickly through the airport.  I am a terrible packer and always bring about twice as many outfits that I need (mostly because I want options!).

Whenever I fly somewhere more than ~ 3-4 hours I like to do red-eye flights because I don't want to waste a day traveling; however, I can never get comfortable and sleep. Brad can always fall asleep by using me as his pillow but I only get bits and pieces of sleep. I just bought one of these pillows and am looking forward to trying out on our trip to New York.

I like taking a water bottle with me; but I want something that isn't bulky or heavy. This water bottle would work well because it is collapsible and wouldn't take too much space when empty.

It wouldn't be a vacation without a new mani-pedi. I love that we have Julep Nail Parlors in the area and love going there prior to trips for a fresh Fab 14 Manicure and some pampering.  If you are in the Seattle area make sure to check them out.

My goal for our next trip is to take more photos, I remember to take photos every once in a while but don't do well at the candid "walking down the street" type photos. This past summer, Brad and I purchased a Nikon D5100, while in Florida last November we had a bit of an accident with it (aka it fell off my neck) so we ended up buying a replacement and after fixing the first one we now have two of them. I love this camera, eventually I want to get a fisheye lens, but I need to figure out more functions before I justify the purchase.

What are your "must haves" when you travel?

The Official Start of Summer?

Is Memorial Day weekend your official start to summer? Here in Seattle, we joke that Summer starts July 5th as Memorial Day and 4th of July are generally overcast and drizzly. We had a slight glimpse of summer a couple weeks ago but now we are back to the standard spring time drizzle. Just because the weather isn't ready for summer my brain is!

I was browsing Nordstrom and found a few items that would be PERFECT for this summer!

I have been wanting a bow belt for a while so I'm thinking this one might end up in my closet. I'm excited that more designers are embracing the Chevron trend and have seriously been drooling over the new Kate Spade collection.

What do you think? What items are you looking forward to this summer?

Soft Rhubarb Cookies

Last week I posted a recipe for some Mini Rhubarb Tarts and was surprised how many people had never eaten this delicious plant. This past weekend I made another rhubarb item - cookies.

Soft Rhubarb Cookies

Makes 4 Dozen
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups chopped rhubarb
Directions:
  • Cream together the shortening and brown sugar
  • Beat in the eggs
  • Slowly add the dry ingredients
  • Fold in the rhubarb
  • Place on a cookie sheet 2" apart
  • Bake at 350 for 12 minutes or until lightly brown
The batch I made Saturday is almost gone! I brought some to work and introduced more people to rhubarb as well!

Are you going to be adventuresome and try out some rhubarb? If so let me know!

Glassybaby Love

Have you heard of Glassybaby? These amazing candle holders are hand blown here in Seattle and glow gorgeously when lit. The founder came up with the idea of this company while battling cancer and they donate a portion of their sales to various charities. You can read about the store's story here.

I have slowly been growing my collection. Last year, I visited their seconds sale where they are sold for about half the price and just slightly imperfect. I want to go back but I will be more prepared next time by knowing to bring a basket, small purse and comfortable shoes.

My mom and some friends visited the Madrona location last weekend to watch the Glassybaby's being blown. She came home with the pink one for me (its name is bff). The green and blue ones I've gathered over the past couple years.

Here it is all lit up next to my family photo.

Ready to start your own Glassybaby collection? They ship free all across the country! I highly recommend them to add a bit of light and happiness to your home.
